It has been ten years since the Trojan War, but Odysseus has been captured by Calypso for seven years. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, has been by Odysseus' side since the beginning. Athena begs her father Zeus to have Odysseus released. Zeus agrees to that, and sends his messenger Hermes to the island where Calypso is keeping Odysseus. We know that Calypso is not evil, but her kindness and promises to Odysseus will keep him from going home to his wife, Penelope. Hermes went to go get Odysseus, and told Calypso that she has to give him up. However, it seems that Odysseus is sad to leave, every night he lay with her because she comforted him. Calypso promises him a raft to get home and a safe journey. After Odysseus finishes building a raft he sets sail, but Poseiden does not let him off easy, he sets a storm and destroys his raft. If it wasn't for Athena and a sea nymph, Odysseus would have died. He arrives to the island of Scheria, and hides into a pile of leaves. |
