Earlier we learned that Homer is religious, so before he starts to tell his story, he prays to the Muses. The Muses are daughters of Zeus, who have inspired people to make art, create dances, and compose music. Homer will hope that the Muses will help him tell the story. The Muses begin by talking about a man who is on a journey back home after the Trojan war. He did not fight for pride or dignity, he fought for his life and the lives of his crew. Homer again prays for the Muse, to help him tell the story of Clypso, the beautiful nymph who trapped Odysseus, and wanted to keep him for herself. After years of being at sea, all the gods pitied him except Poseiden, who is Odysseus' enemy and brings him hardship throughout his journey. |
