After Odysseus was washed up shore, the daughter of Alcinos, king of the Phaeacians. He was brought over to their palace as a guest of honor. The Greeks believed that the guest were "god sent", which me. During the banquet, Odysseus requested a song about himself, while the Minstrel was playing he started to cry because he realized that his crew men would not be making it home with him. After the minstrel finishes his song, the king asks about Odysseus' business and who he is. This is when Odysseus starts to talk about his journey. Odysseus mentions his home in Ithaca, his son who his wife, Penelope, has been raising on her own, his time on Calypso's island and how she was really sweet to him. He questions what is the point of going back home after all he has been through. Odysseus also mentions how foolish his men were throughout the journey home, they drank a lot of wine and did not pay attention to what was happening around them. However, he also talks to them about how his crewmen were read for anything, even when they were outnumbered. There was a day when they did not set sail because they were grieving. Odysseus does not forget about his men, he just is not like that. |
